The Bonnefantenmuseum is the first European museum to present a major solo exhibition by the American artist Kahlil Joseph (1981, Seattle, US). Joseph made his breakthrough as an artist with acclaimed presentations in the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, and The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Underground Museum in Los Angeles, and more recently with the Tate Modern in London and the New Museum in New York. In the distinctive, poetic and impressionist style of his films, Joseph’s work defies genre and form. Quotidian scenes often intersect with eerie, dreamlike imagery that together challenge the boundaries of time and space. The result is a dimensionality that captivates the viewer and disrupts the conventions of hackneyed narrative. Music too figures centrally in Joseph’s films, whether through booming soundtrack or immersive soundscape, commanding as much attention as the image. Joseph continually explores this dimensionality through themes of time, memory, rhythm, spirit, and diaspora, arriving in a space somewhere between cinema and art.
